Not really understanding the border line of a hobby, it became his profession when, in 1977, his first assignment was for a project work with Tor Line in Gothenburg. It was followed by five years with shipbrokers in Stockholm where he was active in S&P and chartering, specialising in passenger shipping. In 1981, he returned to his hometown to become a partner in Marine Trading which for many years held the management contract for Prince of Fundy Cruises as well as Scarlett Line. Stena RoRo has two hats, one as owners of a fleet of RoRo’s and RoPaxes trading for 3rd parties and one as sale and purchase agent for sister company Stena Line . He is a graduated Naval Architecht from Chalmers in Gothenburg and has also attended the Stockholm School of Economics. After a few summer spells at sea Carl-Otto started his career with Kockums Shipyard in 1974. He joined the Kihlberg group, a conglomerate in shipowning, shibuilding and shipbroking in 1979 whereafter he had a short spell with Brax shipbrokers. During Carl-Otto’s time with Stena RoRo AB he has been active in modernising the fleet by ordering 16 RoRo and RoPax newbuildings as well as buying and selling a vast number of 2nd hand vessels maintaining Stena RoRos position as the market leader in these highly specialised segments. From 1984 till 1987 he was the Mayor of Malmö’s press-secretary. Until 1988 Magnus Ehrenberg also served as member of Malmö’s town parliament. In 1989 he moved to Germany where he coordinated the PR-activities for the CDUparty in Hamburg. Having always been particularly interested in shipping, Ehrenberg joined the ferry-company EUROWAY in 1990. He worked at the company’s German dependancy until 1992. In 1993 he moved into the public relations market and founded his own company EHRENBERG Kommunikation, which in 2006 is working for six ferry-companies and three major ports, as well as a number of touristic destinations and other clients. » Speech pdf Bill GIBBONS W.Gibbons@psa-psara.org Williams Gibbons has been director of the Passenger Shipping Association (PSA) since April 1994. Since that time he has worked to actively promote the UK cruising industry to UK holidaymakers and the travel trade, through the PSA’s Passenger Shipping Association Retail Agents scheme (PSARA). The PSA is the trade association for both cruise and ferry companies based in the UK and currently has 38 cruise and 21 ferry members. The PSA is now seen as the main industry voice for commercial matters as well as a source of information and advice for the public. He is marketing director in European Cruise Council since 2002.” From 1990 to 1994 William was an independent management consultant, working particularly in the ferry industry, whilst also studying for an MBA degree. William previously held the post of general manager of Sealink Isle of Wight ferries, prior to which he was the service manager and then ferry line manager for the Harwich Hook of Holland ferry route. William was previously assistant shipping and port manager for the Port of Harwich and worked on the Channel Island services from Portsmouth. He graduated with a Master’s License from Stockholm’s Maritime Academy in 1985 and joined Viking Line. He was given his first command on a ferry operating between Finland and Sweden in 1990 and left the company in 1993 when the Swedish affiliate of Viking Line, Slite AB was declared bankrupt. Captain Gronberg has been with Star Cruises Malaysia Ltd. since the company was established in 1993 and today holds the position of Senior Vice President, Marine Operations, with responsibility for Nautical, Technical, Port Operations, Quality Assurance and the Manning office in Stockholm. He has had the opportunity to be part of the tremendous growth of the cruise market in Asia. The Star Cruises group now operates 22 ships and is the third largest Cruise Company in the world. Captain Gronberg’s special interest is in the development of the best Nautical Procedures and was the project leader for the establishment of the first Full Mission Bridge Simulator to be owned and operated by a Cruise Company. Thereafter, he went back to further education as a Master of Science in Shipping, Trade and Finance at City University Business School in London. As from 1995, he is linked with Grimaldi, first being promoted as Commercial Executive at Associated Oceanic Agencies Ltd, at the Grimaldi Group in London. Since 1997, he headed external relations at the Naples headquarters and became the Area Manager for Greece and Cyprus. Paul Kyprianou was in charge of the PACT (Pilot Actions for Combined Transport) and Marco Polo projects presented by the Group in 1998 – 2003 and funded by the European Commission. He was also appointed a delegate representing the Grimaldi Group Naples at the High Level RoRo Carriers Action Group, Special Committee of ECSA (European Community Shipowners’ Associations), and became its chairman since November 2003. The department work with R&D, concept development, feasibility studies and newbuilding projects for the Aker shipyards in Turku, Helsinki and Rauma. Kai Levander graduated in 1967 as a Naval Architect from the Helsinki University of Technology. He has been with Aker Yards, Kvaerner Masa-Yards and Wärtsila Marine since 1969, mostly working with research and development tasks. He has been the innovator in many ship projects such as the Finnjet Gas Turbine ferry, the cruise ferry Silja Serenade, with the indoor atrium street and the Color Fantasy, a “Cruise Ship with Car Deck”. Among his cruise ship projects the All-Outside-Cabin concept of MS Royal Princess, the Windstar sailing cruise ship, the Diamond SWATHCruiser and the Carnival and Costa Panamax vessels can be mentioned. Through his career Kai Levander been involved in the development of new cruise vessels for Royal Caribbean Cruises, including the Genesis cruise vessel of 220 000 GT. He has since been working with Wärtsilä Corporation and is in his current position as General Manager heading the “Conceptual Design” department, which is part of the Ship Power business unit. Prior to this he has held positions as an R&D Engineer and later as a Project Manager. He has been working with the development of new propulsion solutions for various ship types. He was the innovator behind the CODED machinery concept, which was presented in 2001 in a fast RoPax vessel with CRP propulsion. He also headed the ENVIROPAX project, a joint industry R&D consortium focusing on CRP propulsion development. Influenced by his grandfather and father he saw his future profession in shipping. He graduated in Helsinki as a 3rd generation Naval Architect 1998. Johan began working for Onboard-Napa Ltd in Helsinki as a Project Engineer, taking care of stability software preparation, installations and user training. After 2 years and more than 80 ship visits he started to work as a Sales Engineer. In the year 2001 he was appointed Sales Manager. Carsten ORT LOFF ortloff@fsg-ship.de Spending big parts of his childhood in the construction of Lego ferries, he always saw his future profession in the developing of real ferry general arrangements. Starting to go a straight way towards his goal, he completed a 2-years industrial education in technical draughting after school. Afterwards, he studied naval architecture at the University of Duisburg (Germany) where he graduated in 1999. He paused his studies for 1 year when the German navy called him for military service as navigator on a frigate. From 1999 to 2000 he worked in the technical sales and distribution department of Hoogovens Aluminium in Germany, when the company was the main supplier for aluminium extrusions for Australian’s catamaran builders Austal and Incat. In 2000, he started his career in the product development group of Flensburger Shipyard. Since 1993 Thamm, who has a bachelor of commerce degree, has been a significant force in the establishment and expansion of the AIDA fleet. As Senior Vice President of Operations at AIDA Cruises, he was responsible for all aspects of operation of the cruise ships including the deck, engine, hotel and entertainment areas. In addition, he was in charge of the development, building and the putting into operation of newbuilding projects. With the present four AIDA club ships and a capacity of 5,400 beds in total, AIDA Cruises is one of Europe‘s leading cruise providers. For the years 2007, 2008 and 2009 three new vessels have been ordered. Three years later, he was promoted to Marketing Manager which included management of the Varberg- Grenå (Denmark) route. In 1978, he became International Passenger Manager with overall sales and marketing responsibility for all Lion Ferry’s routes. In 1981, he moved to DFDS Helsingborg as Line Manager. After two years, he became Managing Director of DFDS in Hamburg, Germany, where his contribution to management changes and restructuring led to the company becoming profitable again. Continuing with DFDS, but this time being based in Copenhagen, in 1984, he became Group Director and head of all DFDS Seaways’ passenger routes. In the year 2000, he was appointed CEO and Managing Director for DFDS Seaways and Director of DFDS Group Executive Board, again based in Copenhagen.
